CAN Raises The Alarm Over Frequent Burglary Of Osun Churches

The Christian Association of Nigeria has raised the alarm over the incessant robbery of churches in Osogbo.

The CAN chairman, who is also the Presiding priest over Methodist Church of Living Spring, Isale Aro, Bishop Amos Ogunrinde, said this while speaking with journalists on Tuesday.

He said that the robbers carted away public address systems and other valuables in the affected churches, including his own church.

It was gathered that some churches were in recent time invaded by armed robbers who carted away instruments and other church equipment.

The All Saint Anglican Cathedral, Osogbo was raided twice by hoodlums and instruments worth millions of Naira were stolen.

The CAN chairman stressed that the robbery cases were not in any way connected with the violence that trailed the #EndSARS protest. But he noted that they were an evil plan against the churches in the state.

He said, “Those involved are armed robbers because a lot of churches have been burgled in Osogbo in recent time. We have reported to the police, I think one of them was arrested and the case is still in court. Some people in Lagos have been on the matter begging us that they want to take over the case but we refused.

“After the arrest made by the police some months ago, the cases of invasion and robbery in churches subsided but now it has started again. The burglaries stopped for a while but they have started again. They robbed All Saint Anglican Cathedral twice. We need the security of Osun to come to our aid. “

However, the spokesperson of the Police, Osun Command, Mrs Yemisi Opalola, confirmed that three churches were recently raided.

She gave the names as the All Saints Church, Balogun Agoro, Methodist Church of Living Spring, Isale Aro, and Anglican Bishop Court Church, Youth Chapel, Isale Aro.

She said, “The incident happened during the #EndSARS protest on 5, 12 and 16 October 2020 respectively.

” Four person were arrested in connection with All Saint Church but the church authority directed us to release them. Two security guards were arrested in connection with Anglican Bishop Court Church robbery but the authority said we should not charge them to court, the case is still on hold.”
