Enyimba today failed in their quest to overturn a 3-0 deficit suffered at Sudan’s Al Merreikh after they could only manage a 2-1 win at home to crash out of the CAF Champions League 4-2 on aggregate.
This failure has cost the two-time African champions a handsome payoff of $550,000 (about 253 million Naira).
Saif Terry, who fired a hat-trick in the first game in Sudan, opened scoring in Aba after just seven minutes when he punished slack defending by the home team.
However, Victor Mbaoma drew Enyimba level on 14 minutes, when he slotted home.
The striker, who missed the first leg in Sudan due to injury, then put Enyimba in front in the 51st minute from the penalty spot after Samad Kadiri was upended inside the box.
Enyimba chased the game for more goals but they were not clinical in front of goal and so will now have to drop to the second-tier CAF Confederation Cup final playoffs.
The draw will be staged on Friday.
